Die Ehre Gottes - Cantata for the 2nd Sunday after Trinity
Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach
Conductor : Pieter Jan Leusink
Genre : Cantata
Comment : Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes
(The heavens declare the glory of God) / / Cantata 76 / / Second Sunday after
Trinity / Epistle: 1 John iii. 13-18 (Christian brotherly love) / Gospel: Luke
xiv. 16-24 (Parable of the great supper) / / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1
/ / If we disregard BWV 22 and BWV 23 (which were test pieces for his
cantorate) cantata BWV 76 was the second cantata that Bach composed for Leipzig
(BWV 75 being the first) so it might be fair to assume that he was trying to
impress. This is a long piece in two parts, each with seven movements. / / The
first part starts with a choral movement. The trumpet fanfares the bass soloist
who in turn introduces the rest of the choir singing verse 1 of psalm 19. The
movement continues with a well crafted and attractive choral fugue on verse 3 of
the psalm. After a recitative, there's a pleasing soprano aria with an
attractive violin accompaniment. The next recitative is followed by a rousing
battle aria (Out ye idolatrous mob!) that gives the trumpet and bass soloists
ample opportunities to shine. After a further recitative, the first part ends
with a beautiful setting of the first verse of Luther's hymn Es woll' uns Gott
genadig sein. The trumpet is to the fore here too, but plaintive rather than
aggressive this time. / / The second part opens with a sinfonia for oboe
d'amore, viola da gamba and continuo. You may well recognise it from the organ
sonata BWV 528. Apart from the opening sinfonia, the structure of the second
part is the same as that of the first part. Following a recitative is a curious
tenor aria (Hate ye me, hate ye me well) where the word hate is given prominent
and repetetive treatment! It does calm down a bit later, though. The next aria
(for alto) has a lovely accompaniment with the same instrumentation and a
similar texture to the opening sinfonia. The closing chorale is verse 3 of the
hymn used to close the first part of the cantata, with identical setting.

Track name : Bach - BWV0077 - Du sollt Gott,
deinen Herren - Cantata for the 13th Sunday after Trinity
Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach
Conductor : Pieter Jan Leusink
Genre : Cantata
Comment : Du sollst Gott, deinen Herren, lieben
(Thou shalt love God, thy Lord) / / Cantata 77 / / Thirteenth Sunday after
Trinity / Epistle: Gal iii. 15-22 (The promises made to Abraham) / Gospel: Luke
x. 23-37 (The parable of the Good Samaritan) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating:
1+ / / The text for the day concerns the parable of the Good Samaritan and the
theme of this early Leipzig cantata is a meditation upon the ten commandments.
Immediately, Bach plunges us into symbolism, the opening chorus is absolutely
stuffed full of it! For example, there's immediately a canon, canon=law (a pun,
but a common one of the day). The trumpet intones Luther's chorale These are the
holy Ten Commandments above the chorus and orchestra. The bass performs the
melody in enlarged note values (Thou shalt love the Lord your God is the
fundamental commandment) and the trumpet has ten entries, corresponding to the
ten commandments. Despite (or perhaps because of, knowing Bach's skill in these
matters) all this extra-musical baggage, the chorus is quite superb. After this,
the rest of the cantata might have become an anticlimax but it's not so.
Following a recitative, there's a superb, optimistic, soprano aria introduced
and accompanied by the most meltingly gorgeous oboe duet. The alto aria, that
follows the final recitative, is more reflective (Lord, my love is unworthy,
Ever prone to fault and guilt) and is accompanied by a haunting trumpet line.
The cantata ends with a simple chorale setting. There is some ambiguity here
since the movement has come down to us without a text and authorities differ as
to which hymn verse should fit. / / This short cantata is a most beautiful and
profound and yet, at the same time, intimate work.

Comment : Jesu, der du meine Seele (Jesus, Thou
who my soul) / / Cantata 78 / / Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity / Epistle:
Galatians V. 16-24 (Walk in the Spirit) / Gospel: Luke xvii 11-19 (The Healing
of the Lepers) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1* / / Cantata 78 starts with
one of the most glorious choruses in all music. In the form of a passacaglia
above a chromatic descending motif built from a basically simple figure and
incorporating the chorale melody, this astonishing piece simply takes the breath
away. An equally astonishing contrast is provided by the following movement: Wir
eilen - We hasten with weak but diligent steps to you for help, Oh Jesus, Oh
Master which you simply have to hear to believe! The accompaniment simply
patters along. It's difficult but to picture members of the congregation having
to stifle a few giggles. A recitative is followed by a tenor aria with a
delicious obbligato flute part. A further recitative is followed by another
aria, this time with a lovely sinuous oboe part. A straightforward chorale
setting finishes the cantata. / / For more on this astoundingly beautiful
cantata, do please look at Marshall's essay On Bach's Universality in his
collected essays. "I can think of no more spectacular demonstration of Bach's
powers of synthesis, his unparalleled combinatorial genius…"

(God, the Lord, is Son and Shield) / / Cantata 79 / / Reformation Festival /
/ SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ / / Robertson, in The Church Cantatas of J.S.
Bach, suggests that Bach should have stopped after the chorale Nun danket Alle
Gott and we would have had an excellent short cantata. I agree with him. The
opening chorus of this Reformation cantata is absolutely superb, more splendid
and ebullient even than that of Ein' feste Burg (BWV 80) but perhaps with not
quite so much contrapuntal interest. The following aria is pretty without being
outstanding and the chorale Nun danket is as good as you might expect. It's all
down hill from here. A recitative leads into a duet between soprano and bass
that despite its interesting violin accompaniment tends to overstay its welcome.
The cantata draws to a close with a straightforward chorale setting.

Comment : Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott (A
mighty fortress is our God) / / Cantata 80 / / Reformation Festival / / SIMON
CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1* / / Straight down to business with an enormous
chorale fantasia on Luther's hymn Ein' feste Burg. This is one of Bach's pieces
that I initially found very daunting: Great, yes; To admire, of course; But to
love? Well, these days I not infrequently find myself humming one of the fugal
voices, whistling another and trying to hold the rest going in my head. Anyone
observing this act must think that I'm bonkers. But what the heck, it is a very
beautiful edifice. / / Two wonderful arias follow, separated by a recitative.
The first motors along to a machine-gun accompaniment on the strings, the
seconds swings beautifully in triple time. The chorale that follows does both.
Next is a tenor/alto duet with accompanying oboe da caccia and finally an
excellent four part harmonisation of the chorale melody. Do try to hear this
cantata in both "modern" and "original" performances: The former to get more of
the grandeur of the piece, the latter to hear it in the original instrumentation
(especially the oboe da caccia. Why did this wonderful beast die out? Well, OK,
it was probably a pig to play and keep in tune but it does make a lovely noise!)
/ / There is a very interesting essay about the genesis and publication
history of BWV 80 in Christolph Wolff's excellent collection Bach - Essays on
His Life and Music. If you're used to hearing this cantata with trumpets and
drums, then you may be surprised to learn that their inclusion (in the Bach-
Gesellschaft edition) is probably derived from a parody of this cantata that
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach devised for his own purposes. J.S.B probably had nothing
to do with them at all!
